SHANNON.
• •A Combined concert, dramatic . entertainment, and "social" was held in the Druids' Hall on Tuesday night., in aid of the school picnic funds, and proved very successful. About ,£24 was realised, this sum constituting a record for the annual entertainment. The large flaxmills in this district were closed down on Thursday,, when a meeting of the ilaxmill workers was held in Palmerston North in connection with the union's demands for improvements in swamp conditions. Statements are in circulation that a for d.v frauding the cutters out of their rightful earnings is in existence between millers and trammers. Whatever may bo true of other flaxmilling centres, such assertion!! are false as far as this district is concerned. The cutters and trainmen are paid on exactly the same weights at local mills, and are at liberty anv time to sec their (lax weighed, for which they receive weight-slips.
