WANGANUI COUNCIL QUARREL.

PUBLIC MEETING. (Br Teloirraph—Pren Association.! Wanganui, February 23. A meeting, unique : in tho history of Wanganui, was held this evening, when a very large crowd of men assembled ju tho Druids' Hall. The . meeting was a further development upon the quarrel between members of the Borough Council and the Mayor, whereby tho Mayor resigned rather than give his' casting vote on his own motion to dismiss tho engineer. Tho meeting was decidedly in sympathy with the Mayor, and iouud vent in demanding tho resignation of threo councillors who wero alleged to have prompted the Mayor in his action and then turned back on him. Tho Mayor's actions wero approvod, and it was hoped that ho would allow himself to be nominated again. It is considered that the meeting's demands will not clear the air at all, for it is probable that, unless tho wholo council resign, the three requested will not do so. The council is holding a special meeting on Monday.for tho purpose of electing a Mayor for the remainder of the term.
