CONSTABLE THRASHED.
WOMAN USES HOCKEY STICK. (By T«lcs:raph-I'roEa Association.) Wesiport, February 23. At the Magistrate's Court to-duy Constablo Thos. Keenan was charged by Police Inspector Ulack with having assaulted Margaret Duncan, wilo of tho licensee of viio Victoria Jlolel, on February 1. Tlio evidence of tlio complainant was to tlio cll'ect that she was pestered by tho constable, who invited her to meet him on the uijjlit of February 1, and she accepted tlio imilatioii, with friends following at a short .distance behind. Later she produced u liockey stick, wliicii (die liiul concealed, and gave him a thrashing. 'J'he conslabk-, it was stated, had oil'cral JJIO to keep the matter quijt, and had given a man tho Jjlu to give to the complainant, but lie had cleared oil' with it. At tho conclusion of the evidence for the prosecution, counsel for accused submitted that no offence had been disclosed, as complainant, in accepting the invitation, was anticipating what would happen, and baiting the' policeman. .The magistrate took this view, and commented on the extraordinary conduct of tho woman, and dismissed tho information without calling on the defence.
