COAST STEAMER ON FIRE.
THE FLAMES PUT OUT.
A fire was discovered in the foro hold of the small coastal steamer Queen of tho South at Wellington about G a.m. yesterday. It appears that the donkeyman, wlien approaching the vessel on his way to work, noticed smoke issuing from tho hold. He immediately gave the alarm, and the City Fire Brigade was quicklv on the scene. With the assistance of' tho chemical fire engine, they soon had tho outbreak suppressed. was found that the firo had originated amongst some loose tow, which was stowed away with about twenty tons of general cargo in tho foro part of tho hold. .Not much damage was done, only some cases of preserved milk and a drum of oil being affected by the flames. Tho vessel suffered no damage. It was fortunate that (he outbreak was discovered so quickly, for there was slowed'ill the after part of tho same hold, about 15ft. away, several cases of benzine, and, had the fire reached this portion of (he cargo, serious consequences might have resulted.
How the fire originated is a matter of conjecture. All work on the vessel stoppod at a p.m. on Monday, and the hatches were put on. The vessel sailed for Foxton later in the dav.
