The Premier (Mr. M'Gnwcu), referring to advantage* to lw derived from the Panama Canal, *\i>l that Sydney was now the terminal point of the American lines, jud that two new lines wero projected, for which Sydney would bo the headquarters. When Canada c.ut into American shipping and enterprise it would bo a rery busy Pacific.
) Mr. M'Gowen nd<le<l that shortly before Mr. Seddon'died lie announced his intention of approaching Mr. Deakin, tho then Prime Minister of tho Commonwealth, Kith a view of preventing American expansion in. the Pacific. Nothing more vas heard of the matter, and the probability was thnt Mr. Deakin, who oxtended the invitation to tho American Jleet, was indisposed to fall in with Mr. Seddon's suggestion, which was a very strange one for such a long-sighted politician to make.
Apart from the direct benefit derived from rapid transit, and tho participation in tho fruit and American trade through tho canal, it must be to the security of Australia to find American interests monnting up in the Pacific. Australia bad nothing to fear from the Stars and Stripes.
