AN IMPORTANT APPOINTMENT.
MR. JAMES 111 SLOP TO SUCCEED THE LATE MR. HUGH I'OLLEN. At 11.25 o'clock last night it was announced from thu Prime Minister's office that Mr. James Ilislop, private secretary to Sir Joseph Ward, hail been appointed UnderSecretary to tlio Department of Internal Aif airs, rendered vacant by the recent death of Mr. Hugh l'ollen. Mr. ITislo]) was ljorn in North Taieri (Otago) in 1870, and was educated at the State School tlierOi and later on at the Normal School in Duncdin. In IEBS ho joined tlie Post and Telegraph Department as a cadet, and after live years' service in that Department was transferred- to the Railway Department, in which branch of the Public Servico ho remained for nine years, lattcrlv as ft clerk in the head oilice at Dunedin. In IS'JI) he was appointed secretary to Sir Joseph Ward, when Minister for Railways, and has remained with him ever since. Mr. Hislop has accompanied Sir Joseph Ward to England 011 tlireo occasions, and has earned popularity for his uniform tact and courtesy on all occasions.
