PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.
(Bi Tdeeraph.— Swcial Correspondent.! ■. Palmertton,. January 31. The local fire brigade holds annually a number of contests among its members, and among them is an oral examination to test their efficiency in the various branches of their, calling. Tho competition is ' conducted by ' Superintendent Warner and Deputy-Superintendent W. Barnard. This year, the competition has been won by Fireman F. W. Pettitt, Fireman W. Passniore being second, and Fireman. E. Hitchings third. The Ladies' Guild in connection with Sti Paul's Methodist Church is arranging to hold a garden party in the grounds of Mr. G. H. Bennett, Tc Puke, Terrace End, to take place this day week.
Three civil cases have so far been set down for hearing at the sittings of the Supreme Court here on Friday next, tho Chief Justice presiding.
Palmerston, January 31. A man arrested by the police yesterday for drunkenness, was found to have over .£7O in bis possession. The opening of the new Coronation Hall at Taikorea will tako place on February 8, when acqneert party from Palmerston will contribute the first part of. the programme. Mr. E. D. Bagnall, of Palmerston, has been appointed managing clerk to Messrs. Russell and Campbell, solicitors, of Auckland. Mr. Bagnall has a largo circle of friends hero who will greatly regret.his departure.
