APPOINTMENT OF TRAFFIC MANAGER. In connection with the appointment of traffic man.iger for the Wellington City Train.viys, the Tramways Committee of the City Council reported last, evening that it' had considered (be six applications for (he position, and reduced liiesc to four. It. was proposed to interview llicsc applicants at the next meeting of the committee to be held on Monday, February 5. The Acting-Mayor (Councillor J. Smith) explained that the expenses of the three applicant,? outside of Wellington would be paid. Councillor <T. Godbcr moved to have the matter referred back to the committee. So far as he could see, he stated, the qualifications of the outside candidates wore in no way superior to anyone in their own system. Jle moved, therefore, that the report .should lis- referred back to the committee! for further consideration, and that it should bo requested, in view of the paucity of applicants, to reconsider the question oi obtaining a traffic m.viager from ouNido. Councillor Fletcher: There were 32 applicants. Councillor Godber said that if "these four" were the best that could be picked out of 32 it did not say much for (lie qualilicatbns of the applicant". Councilbr Al'Kenzie seconded the motion. Councilhr Cameron thought that in view of the circumstances, the council would be betlor advised to review the whole matter in committee, and, if possible, decide Ihe appointment. Councillor Fletcher objected. The three outside candidates were entitled to be heard. That was an obligation upon Ihe council, since it had invited applications. The council divided on the question, Ihe result being that the original clause was passed. The applicants will therefore meet the Tramways Co.nmitl.ee on February 5. Councillor Trevor moved that Councillor M'Kenzio should be appointed to act upon the Tramways Committee during the absence of the Mayor (Mr. T. M. Wilford).
