TRAMWAY TO ROSIiNEATJT. Councillor Frost introduced a largo dft: pulutiou of Hoscncath and Hatoitai rc.-i----dents to the City Council last evenina, statins that it came to urge upon the council the desirability of* connecting their districts with (lie city (rumwav sy.-iem. Mr. 11. X. Liardet said that the only disability attaching to re-idr-nee in the suburlis represented was the difficulty of access. This bore with peculiar hardship on women and children. The deputation came to ask for (heir Their district formed part of Greater Wellington, and their patronage assisted luvgely in making the Oriental Bay section pay handsomely. Vopulation was increasing rapidly in Rosenwith and TCatnitai, and the only tliinj likely to hinder their srowth was the ab-oiiee ot a tramway. They estimated that if the desired tramway' were built it would he used by 5030 o!' 6000 people. Moreover, the presence of the tramway would tend to promote an increase of population along the slopes of Mount Victoria. Previous deputations had boon promised that ' tho engineer should report upon their application. They had not teen met by a refusal, but notliing had been done, and they felt that they had been badly neglected. Tho council should give a helping hand to tho people of pioneering spirit, who were willing to live on the outskirts of t.ho city. He asked the council to instruct its engineer again—and see that its instructions were carried out—to report upon the request of the deputation. Tho Hon. J. E. .Tenkinson stated that those parts of Wellington represented by tho deputation had certainly been neglected in the matter of tramway access. He had been advised by a number of experts that tho cost of forming; tho proposed tramway would not bo great, but it would be more expensive as time went on, and land increased in value, 110 earnestly asked tho council' to give such consideration to the request of the deputation as would enable them to sco the trams running in a very short time. Mr. H, D. Edwards, on behalf of the Hataitai Ratepayers' Association strongly supported the representations of previous speakers. Councillor Rhirtcliffe said that the deputation had not made it clear what lino tliey desired the tramway to follow. Mr. Liardet, on behalf of the deputation, stated that its members were eontent to leave the question of route to the oMine.il. The Acting-Mayor linking promised that a report would be obtained from the engineer, the deputation withdrew. The matter was later referred to th« Tramwars Committee.
