So far only two criminal cases aro down for hearing at the next sitt-iiiß of the Supreme Court in Palmcrston. The Chief Justice will preside. At the Police Court to-day, before Mr. A. D. Thomson, &M., a youth named Frederick M'Sherry was sentenced to seven days' imprisonment for breaking into tlip Palmerston Drill Hall and doing several pounds' worth of damage to property. Two boys who assisted M'Shevry in his depredation were ordered to pay 20s. and costs. The magistrate recommended that M'Slierry should be committed to an industrial school. Joseph South, with a number of previous convictions;, was sentenced to a. month's imprisonment, with hard labour for assaulting a man in a hotel and resisting the police. ■Albert James Green received fourteen days' imprisonment for charges of indecency and using obscene language. Frank Bliss was remanded to Christchurch on a charge of obtaining .CI 4-s. lid. from Edward Good of that cjtv by means of false pretences, and William Hillbury was remanded to Timaru on a charge of failing to comply with a maintenance, order. Both these accused were arrested at the Foxton races by Detective Sweeney. A female offender was convicted of stealing a cheque, value .£l, from John Wilson at a Palmcrston hotel. She was fined id>. and ordered to return the cheque, in default seven days' imprisonment. She was allowed a week in which ta pay up. John Morso was charged with atteinpling to steal from the pocket of .Tnhn Murray at the Foxton races yesterday, but Ihe magistrate said the evidence was insufficient and dismissed the case. A great crowd assembled at the showgrounds last night when the Management Committee of the Military Tournament "set oft" the fireworks, which were to have been included in the night display at the tournament held on January 1, but which did not arrive from London in time. The lireworks were really- fine, and some of the "set" pieces were especially good. Magnificent weather prevailed yesterday for the holiday. A great crowd from here journeyed to the Foxton races. On the sports ground thn annual match between the local 'Lodge of Druids and the Phoenix Cricket Club was played, and there sonic till scoring. The Friendly Society men nut up the great total of W2—Batts, 124; Mitchell, 63; Lyall. fil; Turner, (S; Pronde, 39; Colch, 23; Wakelin, IS; Watson (not. out) IC. The Phoenix side totalled 21G—Tottman, 107; Oakley, 2G; O'Sullivan, 22; Boon,-15: F. Greer, 11.

As the Manawntu Rilln Association's annual fixture for yesterday fell through owing to a. paucity of entries, the Palmerston Rifles held a handicap comps-. t.itinn at the Hokowhitu Ranee fm-Mhe Shalimar Cup presented by Mr. Walter Strang, and a number of medals, the distances ljcinif 300, 500, BCD, and 700 yards. Rifleman Ncedhani, who put on the possible at 500 yds., won the cup with a score from scratch of ISO, the medals being won by W. Kello (ser.), 173; S. Tremaino then. '7), 173; H. Griggs (scr.), 171; W. Ball (3), 171; W. Stock (scr.), 170; I'. Mills (scr.), 170; and E. Pratt (3), 1C!). Tlie range prizes were won by Treniaine, Kcedham, Mills and Ball.
