MISSIONS TO SEAMEN.

An all-dav picnic was hold in the Missions to Seamen Institute on Monday, a large number of sailors being present. ■All kinds of parlour sanies were held under the guidance of Mr. V. 8. Shell, the missioner. The men entered into the games with a good deal of vigour, the following winning prizes:—Messrs. IV Thomas, Cooiubes, Rogers, Fisher, Ifigby, Donaldson, Jlartin, Wiliis, Adlan 14), Knowles, and Collins. The following mission workers won prizes:—.Misses Hendry (2), H. Gaudin, nnd Talbot. lhe sailors proved superior to the firemen in a tug-ot'-war contest, and after a very hard pull the men from the Home boats beat the men representing the coasting vessels. Another contest took place between the married and single ladies, the former winning. During the clay the mouth-organ band of the s.s. Otaki, under Bandmaster P. Martin, jnn., rendered several selections. The prizes for the picnic were donated by Mrs. Hntcbi»;;s, Captain Honning, and Messrs. Aldous, and I.evi and Co. l.unch, refreshments, and tea were provided by the choir, congregation, and friends of the mission. The institute was crowded in the evening, when Madame Mueller provided an enjoyable concert. Jlr. 1'". S. Shell occupied'l he chair. The following contributed vocal and elocutionary items to the programme:—Madame Mueller, Mesdames Willis, IC. J. Hurt, Misses K. Burt, V. Mueller, I. Jones, Lissack, D. Jones, Waters, Watkins, Messrs. Culverweli, Mason, Crockett, Bishop, and Curler. Mrs. Burt and Miss Waters acted as accompanists. The band of the Otaki gave several selections. A mouth-organ competition was held and won by Jlr. Baird.
