DANGER FOR WOMEN.
p ATTACKS IN AUCKLAND SUBURBS. (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Auckland, January 22. Recent after-dark happenings in the Rpmuera district have occasioned some uneasiness amongst the women folk of the suburb. Some little time ago a lady who was going home from town after teii o'clock _ at night observed that she was being followed by a man whom she had jiasscd just after she left the tram. At Greenwcod's earner she turned her head as the man came close to her and imu'ediateiy received a stunning blow on the face. She cried for assistance, and her assailant made oft'. Just about a week later an almost identical assault took place on a single young woman iu Fairtax Street at about 11 p.m. The young ladv had left the car near Newmarket and gone up the street towards her home. She turned when she heard following footsteps hi order to see who was behind. It was a man who, without warning, struck her in the mouth, knocking out some teeth. The young ladv screamed, and the man made off, while she went to a near-by house and procured an cscort home. Police' inquiries have so far not had any definite result in the way of arrest. The occurrences, however, draw attention to tlie fact that whilo the suburban areas of Auckland have greatly extended and become thickly populated 'within the past few years, the police staffing of the districts lia.s not been proportionately increased. Though the class of the suburban population is law-abiding and honest, the events chronicled above indicate the necessity for closer polico .surveillance and protection.
