(From Oar Special Correspondent.) ♦ MILLS PICNIC. On Saturday tho employees of the Petone Woollen Mills held their annual picnic at .Maidstone Park, Upper Hutt. On account of the unpropiliotts weather the committee decided, on arrival at Upper Hutt, to engage the Town Hall, and provide amusement for the picnickers, till tho rain cleared, and at noon an adjournment was made to Ihe park, where the various sporting events were got off. All the events were run except the Mill Handicap, and Fitters' Handicap, which had to be postponed owing to the wind. These events will bo run on tho Petone Hecreation Ground on Wednesday evening. Winners in the other events were as follow :— Married ladies' ra:e—Mrs. A. Cate. Married men's race —Mr. Dundadale. Single riien's race—W. 1L Ryan. Single ladies' race—Miss Mooreland. Girls' race—G. Thorpe. PERSONAL. A private cable mesnago was received on Saturday by Mr. J. T. Hopkins, foreman of the Petone Borough Council's plumbing department, notifying that lie hod successiully pas<-ed the examination of the iioyal Sanitary Institute. Mr. W. B. Gongh, Sanitary Inspector, Petone, has received. notification from the lioyal Sanitary Institute that he has passed tile recent examination in sanitary science held in Wellington. TROTTING CLUB. At a meeting of tho stewards of the Hutt Valley Trotting Club held last week, the question of accepting the Hutt Park Committee's offer of the park at a rental of .£3O per day for future trotting meetings. was favourably commented on. A number of those who believe that a change from the Petone Recreation Ground to 'he Hutt Park will be to the advantage of the sport, have of late been canvassing the district for monetary support, for the purpose of building an up-to-date trotting track on the park, should the transfer be decide.! upon. Considerably over J2IOO has already been collected, anil there is every prosjiect of the amount being doubled. The proposal will be submitted to the members at an early date for their endorsement.
