• ♦ AN AUTILLEET CAMP. (By Telegraph.—Srecial Correspondent.) Palmerston N., January 10. Noxt v month n military encampment is to ho held at Orinßi, near Danaevirke. Those mustering will comprise: D Batterv (Wellington), F Battery (Napier), and J Battery (Palmerston). The camp will extend over a week. At a meeting- of tho local fire brigado last evening it was resolved to make an effort to have the next annual competitions of the United Fire Brigades' Association held in Palmerston, aiid with this object in view, a public meeting is to be held on Monday evening to ascertain what assistance can be obtained in tho district towards attaining this end. Tho annual competitions have of lato years, assumed very largo dimensions —something like eight hundred brigadesmen taking part in them—so that it is felt that it would bo a big thing for the town to have the next .demonstration held here. Mr. D. Stewart is supervising tho examinations for Senior Civil Service candidates and teachers. These examinations are now taking place at tho Empire Hall. There are 72 candidates. ■ Adjutant and Mrs. Haywood, of the local corps of tho Salvation Army, were farewelled at the barracks Inst evening. Mr. D. Buick, M.P., presided, and among those present wero a large number of prominent setllers, who wero present to show their appreciation of tlie work done by the Army. Quite a number of spoak"" testified to Adjutant Haywood's splendid effort , during his term here, and besides Iho addresses, there wero a number of vocal and instrumental items. Adjutant and Mrs. Haywood left for Auckland today. The Palmerston branch of the Political Beform Ixsasruo held its annual meeting last night, the president, Mr. A. E. Benr.ett, being in the chair.
