RATHER VIOLENT SCENE.
GIEL, SUITOR, AND THE RIVAL. (By Telecraph.—fiDccial Correspondent.) Auckland, January 9. A caso that has created considerable interest in the district was hoard at tho Rikurangi Police Court to-day, when a charge 01 assaulting a. young man, lianiod Horace Edward Rowlands, was prcl'iMTod against another young man named Marry Wilson Teller. It; appeared from tho cvidenco that both men were suitors for tho hand of a farmer's, daughter residing at Kainianiakii. Tho young lady had been engaged lo 'JVlfer, but recently decided to break it oil, and wished to marry ilovlands. On Christmas Day Rowlands proceeded to eeo the girl's parents, to obtahi their consent lo the union, but Tolfer also appeared on the scene, with a double-barrelled gun, and threatened to kill beth his rival and tho girl. A struggle took place, and, as tho result of the combined elforts of Rowlands, the girl, and her mother, Teller was disarmed.
The girl's father is a cripple, and was unable to take any part \n tho affair. During the struggle Rowlands received a blow from tho stock of the gun on tho head, inflicting a severo wound, and medical assistance, had to bo obtained.
The presiding justices decided to take a lenient view of the matter, and bound Telfer over,in two securities of ,£SO each to keep tho peaoe for twelve months, and also ordered him to pay the Court costs.
