Christchurch, January 9. Tho ferry steamer Jlarnron unexpectedly returned to port at 2 o'clock this morning. She loft Lyttelton at C.20 p.m. as usual, but tho engineers discovered that something was amiss with the machinery, and Cnptiiin Manning decided to return to port. The steamer camo into tho outer harbour and anchored, awaiting tho tug, ami was subsequently brought to the inner harbour. Many of tho passengers were not even aware of tho change in tho vessel's course, and wero still asleep when the Jlararoti came, alongside tho wharf. It is stated that a crack developed in tho thrust box, but happily it was not serious enough to prevent the vessel going abend, but the captain decided not to take the risk of going on to Wellington, and returned to Lyttollon. The passengers will Ro north by the Maori tonight, i Repairs nro being effected, and the Afiiraroa will resume her running tomorrow tught.
