AMERICA'S NEXT PRESIDENT
TAFT OR ROOSEVELT, By Teleerish—Press Afisociatlon—CoDyrlEnt Washington, January 7. According to responsible newspapers the Republican leaders are tupporting a subterranean movement to supplant Mr. Taffs candidaturo by Mr. Roosevelt's, because Mr. Roosevelt is more likely to carry the country. The "Sun" alleges that Mr. Roosevelt is oognisant of tho Insurgents' movement. Moreovor, he has shown little repugnance to joining tha campaign and discredit Mr. Tnft. The situation is almost unprecedontedly difficult and delicate. Only Mr. Roosevelt , 3 categorical statement that he will not accept aomination would clear the air. Such i statement is not expected, anyhow at the present.
Meanwhile Mr. Taft's friends are not. discouraged, believing that tho dignity of Mr. Taft's attitude compared with tho Insurgents' methods or Mr. Roosevelt's attacks on the admiaistration must tell in Mr. Taft's favour.
The Democrats have threatened a recrudescence of Bryanism.
