appearance IN THE WAIRARAPA. Caterpillars arc reported to have mado their appearance in a number of the oat crops in tho Masterton district, and to have already done considerable damage. Tho pest, according, to the "Wnirarapa Times," has this season mado its appearance in some paddocks where it has not previously been known., in fighting the caterpillar, the fanner has been considerably handicapped owing to the wet v/oather, which has prevented tho cutting of the crops when green in order to save them. As a preventive mnnv farmers are turning over a couple of furrows of laud round their crops, and placing lime or salt thereon. A farmer, who has had considerable experience in connection with caterpillars, recommends this method lieiiig adopted as a check once tho pest is discovered in. a crop. The caterpillar wMI eat its way through one crop into another, and tho only way to stay its progress is by tho furrow and salt or iimo system..
