FIRES.
HARDWARE STORK ABLAZE, ~ (By Telegraph-Press Association.) ■ Invercargill, January 1. A five occurred at ,1 o'clock this morning in a galvanised iron warehouse belonging to-Messrs. Broad, Small and Co., at the rear of their Deo 'Street premises. A largo quantity o£ general hardware was destroyed. The damage is estimated at between .£3OOO and .CiOOO. The insurances amount to .£2500 in tho Royal, National, and Yorkshire offices'.

The wholesale store of Mr. John' Esmond,' hardware merchant,, with the contents, was'wholly destroyed hy tiro between 5 and (i o'clock this evening. ili« store was situated on Hayes Street reclamation, and fortunately at tho leeward end of a row of valuable stores and si timber mill. The fire burned fiercely and tho firemen had an unpleasant duty in keeping near the building, so great was tho heat, from it. The local manager was absent at Dunedin. Information as to values and insurances is not available. OUTBREAK AT BLENHEIM. Blenheim, January 1. A fire broke out. in tho busiitfss cen> tre of- Blenheim at mid-day to-day and affected Mr. Penny's stationery and toy shop and the premises of Mr. Sainsbury, working jeweller. Mr. Saiusbury's working foreman had left for luivch, <md shortly afterwards,. smoke was uot'iced at the back of his premises. Tho brigade prevented the spread of tho flames, but Mr. Salisbury's workroom was completely gutted, nothing being saved. Mr. Penny's stock was mostly damaged- by water. Owing to tho holiday, no information as to insurances is available.
