THE M.C.C. ELEVEN

4 SYDNEY MATCH. THE SCORING VERY LEVEL. AND VEIIY SLOW, Bj Teleeraph-Press Association-Copjrlsht (rtcc. November 2", 7.15 p.m.) Sydney, November 27. Tho match M.C'.C. versus New South Wales was restirurd to-day in fine hot weather. The wicket rolled out well and played hard and fait. Mead and "Foster resumed batting for England and faced the attack of Horde™ and Colter. After a. few singles Foster magnificently drove Cotter for four. Next ball hn attempted to repeat the stroke, and Gregory, fielding at.' point, brought off a. rcmarkablo catch, taking the ball, when it was travelling with lightning speed, a few inches from tho ground. In Cotter's next over Mead tipped a good-length ball to Carter, and was caught. He had batted 172 minutes for 16, his stylo being more safe than brilliant. Douglas was at. tho wickets twenty minutes" without, scoring. Trumper dropped him—an easy catch—off Hordern but, next ball, ho was out leg b'ofore. j Ho did not play a singlo forcing stroke, j With Woolley and Barnes in play brightened. The former hit with great freedom, and on ono occasion lifted Hor- j dern for six. Two hundred appeared on tho board after two hundred and sixty-soven minutes' play. Barnes was tho next victim to Folkard, being bowled with an offbreak which ho did not attempt to play, but which look tho bails. Strudwick was bowled by a particularly fast delivery from Cotter, after scoring five. Hitch started by pasting Cotter twice for four, and was then bowled by Hordern in the third over after lunch. ■ Woolley had compiled 43 for fortyeight minutes' batting, this scoro including fire fours and ono six. On the play he was tho most attractive batsman in the team. New South Wales started disastrously, Trumper boing cleverly caught by Strudwick off Foster, in tho first over. Macartney, who joined Bardsley, was out leg before to Douglas's bowling at the other end, also after scoring one. Bardsley was not long in foDowing them. Ho scored 2J in vigorous stylo, and then trying to cut a good-length fast ball from Foster ho tipped it to Strudwick and was held. Gregory and Barbour played very carefully and scored almost as slowly as the Englishmen, tho first fifty taking fiftyfive minutes to appear. At fifty-three Woolley relieved Douglas, aad his second ball Gregory tipped high in tho slips—a chanco which Foster just failed to reach. Barbour was in thirty-six minutes before he scored his M'cond run. He had been hitting hard, but the field was well placed. After tea play sparkled up a littlo and tho hundred appeared after 87 minutes' play. Barnes and Hearno were both cxponsivo End Douglas replaced Hearne. Off his second ball Foster brilliantly caught Gregory in tho slips. Tho batsman had scored CG in eighty-two minutes by pretty cricket. Three balls later M'Elhone was out leg beforo to Douglas without scoring. Barbour played confidently, but when thirtyseven, Hitch bowled him with a perfectlength, very fast ball. Hordoru joined Minhclt. The former was uncomfortable and at threo ho .was caught by Gregory who was fielding as substitute for Doughs off Hitch. Folkard was , bowled with a splendid ball by Foster at six. Minnett played nu excellent innings without taking liberties and scored all round tho wicket. He reached fifty after 75 minutes' batting. Tho English fielding and returning wero not equal to tho standard of previous English . teams. The attendance wa= 12,000. ■ " Following are the detailed scores:— England.—First Innings, Hobbs, c.
