City Councillors at Wainui. A most enjoyable outing was the motor journey undei-taken by the Mayor and City Councillors, with their wives, and the executive officers and sl'alT of tlie City Engineer's- Department, to the new dam at Solomon's Knob. All traces of the recent excavations and work are rapidly disappearing from the vicinity of the new dam, and in a year or two the spot will bo a most picturesque one. Tli9 members of the party were all very interested in the dam which is reall? an imposing niece of work. Afterwards, tho party had tea under tho trees at the lower dam, and the Mayor made a felicitous speech. The return trip to town va» m-ado in quick time. The visitors included tho Mayor (Mr. T. Tho November Show of tho Wellington Rose and Carnation Club, which opens tomorrow at tho Town Hall, promises this yc-ar to be one of tho most successful in tho history of the club. A record number of entries has been received, and everything points to a .brilliant display on the opening day. Mrs. J. G. Wilson, of Bulls, who has twice previously won the Championship Rose Trophy with her magnificent blooms, will become tha permanent owner of this coveted prize if she carries off the championship honours this year, and great interest is being manifested by rival exhibitors. "Our Girls" Entertain. Tho members of the "Our Girls" branch of the Victoria league entertained themselves and somo of their frieuds at a "fancy dress evening" at the Pioneer C'lnb 'last night. Most of the members were in fancy dress, and much merriment . was caused by somo of the representations. Indian-girls, Guy Fawkes, Weary Willie, and all kinds of individuals were present, to say nothing of a celebrated ballerina, v.-lio'fc dancing attracted great attention. Songs, recitations, and pianoforte solos formed part of the evening's entertainment, but the chief event was tho ixirn<lc'of J tho masqueraders. two-by two. Opportunity was taken during the evening of makinj—a-- presentation- to Mrs. Corliss, in recognition of the great interest she has taken in the junior branch. Miss Margaret Knox; on behalf of the members, made the presentation. Supper brought a most enjoyable evening to a close. . Palmerston North News. The Palmerston North Tennis Club opened their season on Saturday afternoon, when the president, Mr. E. H. Morrah, made a pleasant little speech, wishing all the members a very successful season. About forty members were present, and in spite of the high wind, some gcod,games were enjoyed. During-the afternoon tea was provided by Mrs. E. H. Morrah, who 'wore a pretty rosa linen costume, white boa, ancl cream hat with pink roses. Miss Dorothy Morrah was in a simple white linen, prettily braided, with largo floral hat; and Mis* May Morrah, bluo coat and skirt. Others present were: .Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Fitzherbert, tho latter wearing striped linen costume, with rose pipings and larire black hat with plumes; Mrs. F. S. Rosher, nnvy coat and skirt, small green hat and scarf to match; Mif« Lyons, green costume with black hat; Miss Moore, pretty hlne coat and skirt, with beaver hat and white fox fur; Miss Porter, white tennis dress with tuscan hat trimmed with roses, Others present were Mesdamc-s Warburton, M'Knight. Pickett, Hall, and Martin, arid Messrs. Eliott, Connell, Guy, Porter, Collins. Spencer, and Fowler. Mr. and Mrs. R. S. Abraham have let their house at Tiritm to Captain Hamilton, of the Defence Department, and are temnorarily at the Grand Hotel. Miss Abraham is visiting her sister, Mrs. Francis Hewitt, at Linton. Mrs. Parsons (Auckland) spent a few days last week with her sister, Mrs. Penny. Mrs. Cnthbert White (Komako) is the guest of Mrs. Goldinghara.

Miss Derry has been matron of the hospital for eight, and a half years, anri has made many friends, who will regret to hear of her illness.
