WOMEN'S PROTECTION.

SOCIETY'S ANNUAL MEETING. The third annual meeting of the Society for the Health of Woxncm and Children was held in one of the committee rooms of the Town Hall last evening, the Hon. Dr. Collins, M.L.C., presiding. Annual Report. The report stated that tho Plunket Nurse had during tho past year attended 323 babies, and paid 1902 visits. Her services hud been much appreciated by those medical men v.lio had employed her, cad whose instructions sho teaches mothers to carry out ' ' _ As regarded the. prevalence of infantile illness during the hot summer months, the report added that, it should bo noted that .New Zealand dried milk and-glass were substituted for fresh milk- when it was impossible to get a pure milk "supply. Both of these wero capable of being modified to closely resemble mother's milk. The report again urged the desirability of a pure milk supply for tho city, and added that the society had with satisfaction every stop taken by tho City Council, and by tho Hon. Dr. Ooilins I,; t<t\vards that end. The need for domestic help was now greater than ever, many mothers being altogether overburdened and unable to attend to their children. The committee desired to thank all subscribers, Mr. and Mrs. Sydney Kirkoaldie, for substantial assistance with the garden fete last October, and particularly Lord and Lady Islington for sympathy and active interest. The report concluded:—"The averago cost for tho support of a Plunket Nurse is ,£2OO per annum, and tho society gratefully acknowledged a grant of from the" Government, towards this nmount, the remainder of which, has boen provided by subscriptions and donations. The total number of subscribers" is .75. . Thanks werb due.to the Rev,. Mother Mary Joseph Aubert, who,has from time to time taken destitute children to tho "Home of Compassion." . Finances. The balance-sheot showed that the receipts totalled £'330 ISs. 9d.; expenditure, il!)3 9s. 9d,; credit balance, .£ll2 9s. Chairman's Speech. In moving the adoption of tho report and balance-sheet, Dr. Collins congratulated the society upon the work which it had already achieved, and touched on what it might accomplish in the future. Ho had, ho added, been struck by the largo number of deaths resulting from premature birth—deaths of mother and child or of ono or the other. Many of these wore caused by tho hard work of the mother before tho birth of the child, and also by want of knowledgo of how to tako cavo of herself. If they would only realise that they could call in a thoroughly trained nurso who could help and instruct them, many lives would be saved. It was important also that women should understand their duties during the first year or two of tho infant's life, for so "many died from ailments that might have been prevented with knowledge. The .Plunket nurso was willing to go when and wherever sho was called to give help and instruction, though never to interfere with the medical profession. Dr. Collins also touched upon the milk supply of the city. A great deal of gratitude, he stated, was du3 to Dr. Truby King for all that he had done for tho society. Tho report and balance-sheet were adopted. Other Speeches. Sirs. A. R. Atkinson remarked that sho was grateful to Dr. Collins for making the position of the Plunket nurso clear in regard to tho mediM-1 profession. Sho was the tool that they use<l, and it was for her to efficiently help to keep tho mothers and children in health. She was there. however, merely to help the doctor.
