Messrs. Hemingway and Robertson, ot Auckland, have published a very useful work entitled, "Company Returns aid Registers," which consists of a- series of remedies for secretaries, directors, and others, showing the returns to be made, the notices to be given, and tho registers to bo kept by companies registered under tho New Zealand Companies Act, and income tax of companies. Breaches of the Companies Act on the part of secretaries through ignorance are not infrequent, but, with this book as a guide, there should not be any. fines for forgetfulnoss or-ne-glect in complying with the different sections of the Act. The.book deals with every feature of a company's work, with explanatory notes whore such axe needed. The book is bound in handy form, printed on one side only, leaving a blank page at each opening for memoranda. The book will be found invaluable to secretaries, directors, accountants, auditors, and solicitors. Customs revenue collected at the port ot Wellington yesterday amounted to £1268 2s. 6d. SOUTH BRITISH INSURANCE CO. <By Telegraph.—Press Association.! Auckland; October 12. The annual meeting of the South Britisli Insurance Company was held to-day, and was presided over by tho chairman of directors (Mr. John Batger). In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, the chairman gave a short analysis of the balance-sheet, and a com parison between it and that of last year He said: "In tho revenue account you wit f.ee that the net premiums—fire, marine and accident—are £353,240, which is £16,69' more than last year's amount, showing s substantial but not abnormal increase it our business. Interest and rents reachet £35,026, being £1762 more than last year O:. tho other side of tho account th< losses amounted to £187,832, being £9487 let: than in last year's account. In view of th< larger amount we insured, this is verj satisfactory.
