INDUSTRIAL UNREST.
BRITISH COUNCIL SCHEME. By Tclesrrapfc—Press Association—CopyrisliJ (Rec. October 12, 10.10 p.m.) London, October 12. Although diverse views have been expressed by Labour representatives regarding the new Industrial Couucil established by tbo Board of Trade, tho ualanco of opinion teems favourable to the scheme as a step forward. Mr. Applcton, secretary to the Trades Union Federation, fears the council will delay the settlement of disputes, and will bo a stepping-stono to compulsion. Mr. W. Thorne, Labour M.P. for West Ham, declined to become a member of the council, as ho considered it would weaken the power of organised labour. MOUNT LYELL STRIKE. AN ABORTIVE CONFERENCE. (Rec. October 13, 1.20 a.m) Melbourne, October 12. The conference between the directors of the Mount Lyell Company and the officers of tho men's union was abortive. It lasted only an hour. The reinstatement of the dismissed, man White is still the stumbling block. The union, threatens to call out the engine-drivers, and allow the water to flood the mine. The manager however, says this cannot seriously injure the mine. (Rec. October 12, 10.10 p.m.; ■ Sydney, October 12. Mr. "Watson, a member of the Tosmanian Assembly, is visiting Newcastle on behalf of the Mount Lyell miners' strike. It is understood that the Miners' Delegate Board has promised to support the strikers. (Eec. October 13, 1.20 a.m.) Hobart, October 12. It is stated that the Mount lyell Union does not intend to issuo further provision coupons. There has been a great exodus of miners from tho district. COMPENSATION TO WORKMEN. (Rec. October 12, 10.10 p.m.) London, October 12. During 1910 seven great industries paid ,£3,700,000 in compensation to workmen. Miners brought 85 per cent of tho cases. CONGESTION IN LONDON. London, October 11. There is still considerable congestion at the docks and on tho railways as a result of tho recent strikes. Much merchandise for Australia has been delayed for several weeks. LIMITATION OF APPRENTICES. Melbourne, October 12. At a meeting of tho Chamber of Manufacturers alarm was expressed at tho fact that under tho wages boards' limitations no apprentices could bo taken on- in various trades for some years. A committee was appointed to deal with the matter.
