LECTURE AT THE ARTS CLUB.

Lost evening an interesting lecture upon Maori ilyth and Legends' and their meanings was given by Mr. H. Stowell (Have Hongi) at the Arts Club. Mr. Stowell stated that a myth contained in tabloid form ancient wisdom, and as time advances it goes through various stages— the myth elaborated, legend, legendary tradition, traditional history, and finally authentic history. The sneaker then compared the myth of Apollo aad Daphne with that of the pursuit of the twinmaiden, of Sawn and Dusk, llinititaraa, by 'fane. The former was not logical, for Daphne (the Dawn) could hardly take refuge in a stationary tree, whereas in tho Maori myth, the maid of lightning took refuge in a kai-komako tree (tho lircfriction tree). The myths o-re largely solar, dealing' with the sun, moon, planets, and stars, and tho Maoris hod evolved a zoadical system, oven bringing in the Milky Way. Mr. Stowell utterly, discredited the legend of Tutanekei ■' and Hinomoa, and adduced proof as to why he did not give any credence to it, A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr. Stowell for his lecture, and also one to Mr. "Field, M.P., for his invitation given to members of the club at the last meeting to visit his place in the country, and also to take a party up Mount Holdsworth.
