PROPOSED NEW CABLE.
ACE OSS THE TASMAN SEA. (By TolcCTaDh.-SDccial Corre6Dondent.l Auckland, October 2. The proposed laying of a now cablo ■across tho Tasman Sea by tho Pacific Cable Board was outlined fc) a recent speech at Wellington by Sir Joseph Ward, tho object being to «slablish direct comliumicatiou by cablo with the aid of two short overload lengths of lines between Sydney and Auckland. Inanirics made in official sources in Auckland have failed to elicit any further information in,ro'prard to the proposal, Mr. Millward, of the Pacific Board, is.about to visit NewZealand, probably ar'rivinst iu Auckland on Sunday next, and it is understood that whilst hero he will 5:0 into tho pros and cons of tho scheme! including the preliminary question of a survey of tho West Coast in the vicinity of the Manukau with a viov; to testim its suitableness for tho landing of a cable. Many of theso acquainted with tho West Coast and its physical conditions express tho opinion that it is by no moans suitable for the terminus of a submarine cable. Tho suggestion that it would be landed at Oncliungaisnol, recorded seriously.' it being presumed that tho intention is to land tho cablo a short distance north or south, probably north, of the Manukau bar, which, of course, would have to bo avoided. Whilst it is 'agreed by several of those who have given attention to tho subject that the removing of tho terminus from Doubtless Bav to Auckland is desirable, it is urged that the new cable should come by way of the East Coast and be landed near Takapiina, and thence brought over tho narrow stretch of land and across the upper part of tho harbour abovo tho principal navigation channels to tho city.
