A BRAVE DEED.

A BOY RESCUED FROM DROWNING. (By -Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Auckland, October 2. An act of singular bravery was performed on a recent afternoon by Mr. Harry Taiifield, of Kinsslaiiil, in rescuing a ten-year-old boy from drowning. The boy, who is a sou of Mr. I{. Drown, Kingsland Koad, was playing with a younger companion near a clay pit in wliat is luiown as Cabbage Tree Swamp. The pit contained about twelve feet of muddy water, and in endeavouring to recover a etick which had i alien into it, young Brown, who was unable to swim, lost his hold and foil in. Tho other' boy ran for his mother, who in turn summoned an elder lad. The latter, however, was unable to swim with his clothes on, and accordingly went for Mr. Tanfiold, who was painting a house some distance away. Mr. Tanlicld ran straight to tho spot, and without waiting to remove liis apron, dived in alter tho lad. The latter had gone down for tho last time, and only his cap could bo sf*cn. Mr. Tanh'eld was at first unablo to find tho body, but diving a eecond timo happened to bo moro successful, thouali the muddy water prcveutod him from feeing auything. Tho boy was apparently lifeless when brought ashore, but artificial respiration was applied by Mr. Tanfield, and (lie boy came to in a short time. Dr. P. Moir then arrived and took charge of tho lad, who was removed to the hous> uf a neighbour. Mr. Taufiold was Hie means of saving the lifo of a small child somo ten days previously. Ho was in his .house..when ho,heard cries, and going out found a child with its dross iu Ihimcs. Those ho promptly smotiiered, thus saving (ha child from almost certain death by burns.
