MASTERTON NOTES.
THE RACE FOR TRADE. (From Our Special Correspondent.) Masterton. September 28. The "Wnirarapa Ago' returns to. tliffl charso over what it terms "masterful inactivity" of Wellington mercantile houses. " It alleges tliat'circulars-from Auckland houses arc being frccl.v distributed among the farmers of the FortyMile Bush, and that orders for clothing, etc., have been sent to tb© northern city, It further alleges tliat, owing •to tho delays in the transit of goods from Wellington along the Wairarapa railway line, it has been found moro expeditious to order from Auckland. The paper points out, ns evidence of tho inactivity of Wellington, that tho merchants and Chamber of Commerce of that cily liavo gone to 110 trouble to urge upon tho Government tho importance of deviating tho Eimutika railway, and thus bringin" tho Wairarapa district into closo touch with the eea-board; that no movement has been made in the direction or bringing tho bnckblocks settlements into closer communication with the Empire City; and that, whilst .Auckland is spurring on 'the Government to push, forward railway communication between the northern city and Gisborne, Wellington is doing practically nothing m the matter of linking up tho southern CI It is probable that the conference bo- . tweon members of tho "Wellington hemcation Board and tho local bodies interested. on the question of the establishmoiit of nn agricultural school in tho Wnirarapa, will be held at Masterton in the course of a week or two. It is suggested that the whole of the apneultura' societies and loco! bodies .between Foathcrston and Woodvillo be invited to send delegates to tho conference. Meanwhile information is being gathered concerning tho methods adopted in other countries. _ 'The installation of electric hglit. m the 31 astevton Town Hall was celebrated last night bv holding n concert in aid of tho 'fund to defray expenses. 1 hero was a very fair gathering ol the public, and a good programme was presented. The improved lighting seemed to bo a somewhat, general subject of comment. A statement published m another ; township that there have been ten bauk--1 rupteies in 31astcr(on in I lie first tliroo months of the year, and that, if Una avorago continues, there will be forty ' bankruptcies in the. year, is denied, by the tradespeople and projwrtyJioltlfrs ; here. As a matter of fact, during tho last throe months not one bankruptcy has been recorded in tho 3lastertoii clco ! torate, and the outlook for trado tipi. i>enrs to be good. . Tho weather to-day was delightfully ; fine, and spring-like, and there is an abundance of grass for stock. . hearin„ „ commences next week on seteral of tho p large stations in the district.
