About seven o'clock this morning pro-, longed "tooting" on tlio railway whistles' at the Elation proclaimed that' some-! thing was wrong, and, shortly after, the [ire-bell sounded an alarm. The cause was a fire in a cottage at the western end of Main Street. Tho brigade quickly quenched the flames, only one corner of tho building being burnt. The cottage was occupied by Mr. G. 11. Jones, and was insured in the Standard ofiico for .£100) tho contents being insured in the Loudon and Lancashire office for a similar amount. A rather successful sale of work in aid of the Melanesian Mission Fund was held at All Saints Sunday Schoolroom' last evening. The local Homing Pigeon Club held a raco from Ohnkuno yesterday. The event was won by Mr. L. Roberts's uomiim- ' tion. At th® instance of the president of tho Society for tire Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, proceedings were instituted in tho Poliro Court against a Chinese named Joo Tom for ill-trcatjng a horse. . lie was fined 'JOs., and costs 21s. A social evening in aid of the Catholic Coronation bnzaar fund was held'at the Umpire Hall, when between 70 and 80 couples were present. Mr. 13. L. Broad was secretary, and Mr. O. M'GrathM.C. Tho Congregational Church Tennis Club has olected the following officers:— Presidfiit, Hov. D. Hirdj vice-presidents, Messrs. J. J. Whitehead, R. Banks, W. Mundy. and W. Cullen; secretary, Mr. Geo. Stout; treasurer, Mr. O. H. Markland; committee, Messrs. C. Taylor, G. Stout, A. Hoe, and R. Bryant. Seventy new members have joined this year. Dr. A. A. Martin, who has been attending the Medical Congress in' Sydney, has returiiod to Palmerston. .Mr. L. H. Collinson and Miss. Colliusan arrived back hero yesterday from their visit to England. They were met at the station by a number of friends. Mr. Alfred Seiffrt, who has been spending tho winter months in Auslralia, returned to Palmerston yesterday. A poll of ratepayers in the Oroua Drainage Board district defeated a pro-, pw-al to raiso .£2500 to vipo off , tho liability in connection wilh tho improvement of the main drain, by 117 votes to SG, a three-fifths majority being required.
