Tho Brougham Hill Clubs « was officially declared open by the j ievident, Mr. J. G. W. Tho Newtown Club opened their season on Saturday. There was .a large'attendance of members aud their friends. 3lr. W II P. Barber (president), in PJp 0 ""' ing the opening ceremony, said that *> everybotlv was aware, they were to hino the final'for tho Davis Cup played m Aew Zealand this year. Thoy would ha™ teen more pleased had Wellington been chosen a, the locale for the battle. However, tho feeae was not far distant, and ho was sure that a largo number .of tenuis enthusiasts from this city would jomiey to Chr stchurch to witness *-M e . m s? n °s* certainly give an impetus to tennis, in tie Dominion. lie was a great believer m tho apportioning of- parts of the lown Belt to clubs for recrfntion purposes, providing attempts were made lo improve tho surrounding.;. The, Ncwtown Club had expended over .EGOO on their courts had cleared the ground of the corse which had practicallv covered it, and planted trees, some of which were given by the corporation oil Arbor Day. It ,vas cnly a matter of a few years till the ground would be one of the beauty spots of JSev.-town. In. conclusion, the president wished the club a very prosperous season, and tnen rteclared the courts open. Thr»e cheers were uiven for Jlr. l.arber, and tea haung been dispensed, tho courts were kept busy for the rest of the afternoon, a goodly number of players from other clubs participating. An apology for absence- was received from tjia Mayor aud Jfrs. Wilford.
