IBy TelegraplirPresa Association.) — « ANGLICAN CONFERENCE. New Plymouth, September 21. The Archdeaconry of Taranaki to-night concluded a two-days' conference on tho lines of tho Church Congress. The conference was conducted largely by laymen, and was presided over by Bishop Crosslcy. Papers were submitted by laymen and clergy on "Girls' Friendly Society," "Church of England Men's Society,"
"Lay Readers and their Work," "Melanosinn Mission," "Home Missions," and an address was given by tlio Rev. Mr. Hawkins on "Maori Missions." Tho lastmentioned address was followed by -an address in Maori by the Rev. Kapa, who was ordained at St. Mary's this morning.
CLAIM FOR £1000 DAMAGES. New Plymouth, September 21. The Supreme Court to-day heard the Claim of Wm. Humphries against the Westport Coal Company for £1000 damages for injuries sustained by being knocked down and run over by one of the company's carts, thereby sustaining permanent hurt. Tho case lasted all day, and as mass of evidence was taken, but the jury found no negligence on the part nf the company's driver, aud found for defendant. Mr. Jollicoe appeared for plaintiff, and Mr. Herdman for the defence. WHALE WASHED UP. 1 Timaru, September 22. A whale,' said to bo over 60ft. in length, was washed ashore near Makikihi. It; is supposed to have been dead for two f or three days. The finders propose to sell it.
