THE DEATH OF LT.-COL. HAWKINS.
MESSAGES OF SYMPATHY. IBy Telerraph -Press Association.! Christchurch, September 22. General surprise and regret has bocn expressed at the sudden death of Lieut.Colonel Hawkins. Mre. Hawkins has received the following messages of sympathy From the Prime Minister: "Deeply regret to hear tho distressing news of the ticath of Colonel Hawkins. You haw the sincere sympathy of Lady Ward and myself in the irreparable loss that has overtaken you." ' From General Godley: lam deeply grieved to hear of-your sad beroavement, Tho New Zealand Army has lost one of its best soldiers, and 1 voice tho sympathy of tho wliolo of tho forco with you in your loss. For mysolf I feel I havo lost a personal friend." From Messrs. T. H. Davey and G, Witty. M.P.'s: "Deeply regret to hear of your great loss. Permit us to tender to yourself and family our sincere sympathy." ' Further messages of sympathy have been received from Lieut.-Coloucl Beckingliaro, O.C. 2nd Regiment, No. 2 Infantry (Timaru); Mr. T. W. Walker (town clerk, Invercargill); Captain Mcddings and stair (Nelson); Colonel Bowler, O.C. Ist Regiment, Otago M.R. (Gore); Mr. J. A. llanan, M.P., Mr. B. M'Nab (Palmorston North), Defenco Stoves staff (Wellington), and Mr. T. Y. Seddon, M.P. ■At tho inquest held on tho body of Lieut.-Colonel Hawkins this morning tho. coroner (Mr. H. W. Bishop, S.M.), in accordance with tho nicdical evidence, returned a. verdict of death from angina pectoris. Tho garrison order by Colonel W. A. Day, V.D.A., D.C., is as follows: "With deep regret the officer commanding tho district announces the death on Thursday, Septemlwr 21, of Colonel J. E. llnwkinij, Y.D., N.Z. Staff Corps. officers in the Canterbury Military District will wear tho prescribed mourning when in uniform till October 22, inclusive. Military bands will not play {n public except on military duty, and all military entertainments aro to bo eanoclled till October 22, inclusive." The funeral will take place on Sunday afternoon.
