HIGH-PRICED GRASS SEED.

A SHORTAGE. It was thought that Inst autumn would sco the high-water mark of grass-teed value, but, says the Journal of the Department of Agriculture, there is every indication that thero will yet bo a con- | siderablo increase in price for the majority of grass and clover seeds. From reports, to hand 1 it appears that the EuroEean and American grass-seed harvests ave been below tho average, while the demand has been of an expanding nature. It is probable that an extension of spring sowing will take place this year in the South .Island, partly by reason of tho ravages of tho grass-grub Some idea of tho present shortage may bo gained from tho fact that tho best lines of white clover are at present worth .£l3O a ton wholesale in New Zealand. In the United States timcthv seed has been selling at over a hundred per cent, above its normal price. The present shortage of New Zealand cocksfoot will be somewhat made up lir the reshipment to New Zealand ;of lines exported to Britain from the Dominion two seasons ago.

EXPORT OF PORK, AUCKLAND FARMEKS' EXPERIMENT. An, experiment, having for its object tho inauguration of an export of pork trado with Germany, is being made by the Auckland Provincial Executive of tho Farmers' Union (says tho "Star"). At the prescnt.pork is admitted free to Germany provided tire liver and kidneys are left in the carcass. With a view to testing the possibility of opening a trado with Germany; the. union,-at the request of a German importer, is sending to Germany two frozen carcasses containing tho internal organs and two others treated in the ordinary method. Tho experiment' will determine whether, the pork can be transported in accoTdanco with German requirements, and should success bo doubtful the second p.air of carcasses will be used as exhibits in ah endeavour to have the condition providing for the presence of the liver and kidneys removed.
