Tho people of Brooklyn arc up and do. ing in the cause of charity. Oil Friday last Mr. W. I'earce, a jeweller by trade, who had fallen 011 had times, died, leaving a widow and live children absolutely destitute. The position oi' the unfortuiihtn woman was accentuated by the fact tlmt prior to his death her husband had been out of work, as well as in poor health. At a meeting held last evening in Full, lord's Hall, to devise ways and means of assisting the widow and her children (tlio youngest of whom is only seven months old), there was an attendance of about forty. Mr. George Frost was voted to the chair. After the position had been explained, it was decided to set up a committee to raise funds. Mr. Frost was appointed chairman, Mr. J. Backhouse secretary, and Mr. A. Bates treasurer. All present were elected a general committee, and an executive, consisting of Messrs, Sliortt, M'Kowen, and Hopkirk, and Mes(lames Backhouse, M'Keown, and Shaw was set up. Mr. Frost announced that ho had collccted the following subscriptions: —Mr. li. A. Wright, M.P., ; Messrs. W. H. P. Barber, T. Wilford, M.P., Dr. Cameron, L. M'Kenzie, and "A.8.," il Is. each; and A. Fitchelt and "W.L.," 10s. each. It was also notified that Mr. M'Kcowen had collccted the sum of X 5 in small amounts. f A meeting of tho general committee is to lie held in Fullord's Hall on Thursday next. At the request of tho chairman (Mr. G. Frost), a subscription list will be opened to-day at The Dominion office.
