THE TOURNAMENT AT WANGANUI. PROFESSIONAL AND AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Wanganui, September fi. Glorious weather was experienced today when the New Zealand golf championship meeting, which is being held- on Belmont Links, was continued. The day's programme was opened by D. M'Cormick, J. Goss, junr., and F. W. Seifcrt, playing over six holes' to decide who should qualify fqr the amateur championship, having tied for the thirty-scc-ond place in'the qualifying rounds of the open championship. At tho fourth hole Goss was bunkered, and lost three strokes, thus falling out of the running, Soifert and M'Cormick continued to the eighth hole, whoro the latter made the deciding score. The first round of the professfunnl championship was then started, only two pairs being drawn. Keen interest was taken in tno match between .T. C. Johnson and J. M'Cormick, both of whom, especially Johnson, had been showing excellent form. Both men played very fino games, but M'Cormick showed particularly good form, and beat his opponent 4 up and three to play. W. M'Ewan, the local professional, after a very close anil exciting match with Butters, boat the Invercarmll professional 2 up and 1 to play. The second round will be played to-morrow. Tho first round of the amateur championship was productive of some excellent golf, quite,a number of good cards being handed ii. Special mention must be mado of tho match between Kapi Tareha and Imlay Saunders. Tareha, who had been playing splendidly, was in particular good form, and it is almost certain that had he played out the round he w;ould have established a record for the link 9. Sixteen holes wero done in 65, and if, as is commonly done, and as Kapi did in bogej' afternoon, he had holed out in 4 for each of the remaining two holes, ho would have finished in 73. The following are tho results:— A. I). S. Duncan beat L. Seifcrt, 5 up and 4 to play. J. f'orbes beat J. Cameron, 3 up and 2 to play. Kapi Tareha beat Imlay Saunjlers, 3 up and 2 to play. B. L. Taylor beat E. Smith, 6 up and 4 to play. A. L. Kidstone beat J. Park, 4 up and 3 to plav. C. W. Rattray beat P. Trolove, 1 up at tho 19th hole. J. C. Burns beat D. M'Cormick, 4 up and 1 to play. G. M. Dodshun beat G. M. Pharazyn, 2 up., K. Duncan beat D. Pryde, 3 up and 2 to plav. ' H. L. Wright beat G. Saunders, 2 up and 1 to play. n. B. Lusk .beat J. C. Bidwill, G up and 5 to play.. H. M. The proceedings opened with the professional championship, the first round of which was played. The defeat of J. C. Johnson by J. MacCormiek was quite a "boil over, but tho Aucklander played a frood game, and deserved his win. M'Ewan, the Wanganui professional, gained a victory over R. C. Butters, ot Invercargill, after an interesting game. There was some excellent in the first round of the amateur championship, tho form shown by Kapi Toreha, of Napier, being especially gOod. Ho met I. Saunders, of Wanganui, who played one of his very best games, and yet suffered defeat. On the out journev Saunders did 37, but his opponent did 35, and, at the 13th hole, his score -stood at .65—an exceptionally, fine performance. He had the game won at,this stage, and did not play out, though, had ho done so, with two fours, ho might have got home with 73. • ' H. B- LusVs defeat of J. C. Bidwill by G up and 5 to play was a surprise. Tho winner played with much steadiness, hut Bidwill Was not putting up to form.
