e (From Our Special Correspondent.! Palmerston, September C. Tho Borough Council held its fortnightly meeting last evening, the Mayor (Mr. J. A. Nash) presiding. Applications for tho free use of the Municipal Hall for entertainments were granted to the promoters of the proposed children's ward at tho hospital, to the promoters of a Scotch concert and dance in aid of the High School funds, and to the Palmerston Brass Baud. Among the correspondence was a letter from counsel representing Mr. R. S. Abraham, calling upon tho council to abate au alleged nuisance in allowing water to flow on to his property. This matter, which is an oldstanding grievance, was referred to tho borough engineer for a report. The treasurer's etatemeut showed tho overdraft to be .611,315. Tho reports of tho books and cemetery committees and the engineer's report wero read and adopted. Prom the latter it was gathered that thirty building permits had been granted during the month of August. It was decided'to have the alterations and repairs to the old fire brigade station carried out by day labour, the only tender received being much above tho engineer's estimate. It was'decided to take polls of tho ratepayers on proposals to raise loans for a new library (,£5255), swimming baths (.£1910), and various public works (,£12,200), making a total of over .£22,000. Members of tho Wellington Orphans' Club aro to give an entertainment here shortly in aid of the funds of tho proposed children's ward at tho hospital. Osier willows are being planted largely bv tho borough workmen on various parts of the river bed bounding tho town. The council is already receiving fome revenue from willows planted several years back, tho new growth being used for basketware, etc. In tho monthly medal competition of the Manawatu Ladies' Golf Club on the Hokowliitu Links yesterday, Mi ss Sybil Abraham was first in the senior A section with a score of 96—11—85. Miss C'oombe was first in Uie senior B section (119—40 —79), and Miss Wylds first anions tho juniors (113— scr.—ll3).
