Mr. Vernon was articled to his profession in London, and came to New Soutli Wales when 2(1 years of ago, to represent Hie firm to which he hail been articled, licturning to Kngland, he practised his profession in London and Hastings, but in 18Sji he decided to settle in New South Wales. In 18S0 Iho Government induccd him to give up private practice and devote himself to State works. Among the buildings in Sydney Mr. Vernon designed are the National Gallery, in tlio Domain, the lfoyal I'riuce Alfred Hospital, iho Mitchell Library, the Fisher Library, Challis House, and the Kenmore Hospital for the Insane. He is a colonel in tlio 2nd Australian Light Horso Brigade. Mr. J. A. Grinnvood, who has held the position of chief clerk in the Union Company's Auckland office for a number of years, and who has been promoted to a responsible position in the company's head office at Dunedin, was presented with a rose bowl, suitably inscribed, by the Union Company's Auckland stalf 011 Friday evening. Mr. C. 13. Melville, of Baldwin and Rayward, left for Cliristcliuroh last night on a short business trip. Mr. Cecil F. Adams, A.1.A., has received the appointment of secretary and actuary to the Co-operative Assuranco Company, Ltd., of Australasia, which has its head office in Sydney. Mr. Adams was for many years in the actuarial branch of the Government Life Insurance Department, Now Zealand, and afterwards became manager of one of the branch offices of the New Zealand Insurance Company, a position he held for seven or eight years. Mr. Adams is a brother of Mr. ArthuT n. Adams, and son of a former Commissioner of Crown Lauds in New Zealand. At the Commercial Travellers' Club on Tuestlny evening Mr. B. J. Jacobs, who has severed his connection with the legal firm of Bell, Gully, Bell, and Myers to enter tile office of Mr. C. B. Loughnan, was farewelled by his former fellow-em-ployees and legal friends. During the evening lie was the recipient of a memento of esteem. Mr. Geo. Toogood is to leavo Wellington for England shortly 011 a six months' business visit. Mr. Toogood will travel via Canada, and it is likely that ho will leave either by the next San Francisco or Vancouver mail steamer. Mr. E. V. Luttrell, a very old resident of tho Gisborne district, died yesterday.— Press Association.
