A social gathering of the officers, noncommissioned officers, and men of tu Collcgo Rifles, now merely a letter of the alphabet in the company units of tho Filth Regiment of New Zealand Infantry in tho new order of things, was held at tho Tiffin Tea Rooms last evening. The function took the form of a smoke concert, and the evening was pleasantly whiled away with toast, speeches, songs, recitations, and other items. Captain J. Hutehen, officer commanding tha company, was in the chair, and among the guests of the evening were Colonel R. J. Collins, C.M.G., (jolonel J. R. l'ltrdy, Director-General of Medical Services, Lieutcnaut-Colonel W. G. Duthie, Officer Commanding the Fifth Regiment, and other officers of tho regiment. Further inquiry into the complaints regarding the Daily Hail's" delay in forwarding to the Wellington Suburbs Defence Rifle Club the Empire Cup won by the club in May last go to show that the trophy will arrive in due course. The delay occurred in connection with a protest raised by a Wellington officer that the dimensions of the targets tired at 011 tho day of the match exceeded those proscribed by the, rules of the -competition. While expressing 110 opinion of ; the merits of tho case as between town and country clubs the chief members are hostile to any overt i;iove for increasing the days beyond the 250 allowed by the Act. They hold that these are in excess of tho ratio required by the population obtaining in other Englishspeaking centres. Their secretary (tho l!ev. J. J. North) has offered to provido to the Premier another national deputation to urge upon him to maintain m its entirety tho 1910 Act. Wilford has telegraphed to the Minister for Railways complaining of the unreasonable delays on tho journey of tho 5.12 p.m. train from tho city to Upper Hutt. This train stops at all stations, and at Lower Hutt is frequently deiayeil for some timo whilst .shunting operations are carried out. Malcolm Champion's medals won in England are 011 exhibition in Mr. T. Shields's window in Willis Street.
