PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.
(From Our Special Corresnondent.l Palmerston, August 29. " A conference of local school committees was held at the Mayor's room last evening, Mr. T. R. Hodder being voted to tho chair. The principal business was consideration of the question of continuation classes at tho Technical School. In the discussion which took place, the opinion was generally expressed that, thoso pupils who had not received proficiency certificates should bo compelled to attend continuance classes, but it was resolval cot to take any action in the matter at present. The following motion, however, was carried;—" That it be ti recommendation to the Education Board to instruct the headmasters of the town schools where second and technical schools are in existence, to furnish to their respective school committees, at the close of each year, a complete return of all scholars over fourteen years of age who have left school during the year, and to state, where possible, if scholars are continuing their education, and where." It was decided to bring under the notice of school committees the suggestion to hold a com-bin-ed sports gathering. The question, of the benefit performance, which the borough council propospd to give with its picture show, in aid of local school conimittee funds, was di-ciissed, with special reference ns to how the, proceeds were to bo divided. It, was suggested that it was hardly fair that the Catholic school, with only' ore hundred pupils, should receive ns much as the Campbell Street School, with 700 children. At. the meeting of the High School Board of Governors last night, the chairman gave notice, of motion as follows:— "That the resolution combining the control of the High School and Technical School be rescinded, and the previous system of separat-o committees bo reverted to." Mr. Collinftwood said that he did not think that the. present position was tenable in law. The raw engineering workshop at the TVcluiiteil School is now nearly completed, and will be opened by Mr. W. Butherford on September 12.
An old Maori veteran, Mr. Isaac Kent, died at the Palmcrston Hospital yesterday, aged 70 years. Deceased served several years in the early sixties in Hawkc's Bay under Major Frawr, and saw a good "deal of service on the East Coast.
