REFEREES'. ASSOCIATION. A meeting of tho Wellington Hockey Keferces' Association was; held last evening, Mr. J. W. Gendall presiding; 111 reply to a letter from the Wellington Hockey Association in reference to the- appointment of referees on July 22 for junior and third-class matches, tho secretary was instructed to write explaining tho position, and also to state that tho meeting considered it advisable that all matches should in future be postponed on tho dato'of shield fixtures. Tho secretary was instructed to write to Mr. A. A. Bennett expressing sympathy regarding a family bereavement. WELLINGTON ASSOCIATION. The Management Committee of the Wellington Hockey Association met last evening, Mr. W. J. Orgin presiding. It was decided to advise tho Auckland Association that it did not appear possiblb to send a team north this year. The association would if possible Eond a team early next season, and this team would also be able to meet Hawke's Bny. WELLINGTON SHIELD TEAM. The following team has been selected by Mr. H. V. Walton to defend the shield against Nelson next Saturday:— Goalkeeper: It. Dwyer (United). Fullbacks: C. Hickson (United), M'Eldowney (United). Halves: Right, R. Parton (Y.M.C.A.); centre, C. Campbell (Karori); left, It. Thompson (United). , Forwards: Eight wing, Salek (Victoria College); inside, C. Ejtrack (Victoria College); centre, G. Strack (Victoria College); inside, G. Davies (Karori); left-wing, Loader (Y.M.C.A.). SHIELD MATCH MATTERS. Owing- to 6ome of the players being nnablo to obtaiu extended leave, the Otago Association havo decided to only play Canterbury and Wellington this season. A final trial game is .to be played to-day, after which the representative team will be selected. An Auckland writer, commenting on last Saturday's Shield match with Wellington, says:—The struggle will go down in the history of the "game that grows" as absolutely the finest, fastest, and most scientific exposition of hockey over played- in the Dominion, and those spectators who journeyed across to the.famous convincing ground at Day's Bay in eager anticipation of a keea and interesting gamo left the ground with a glow of enthusiasm, for they were well rewarded with a hundred minutes, instead of tho usual seveiity, of exhilarating hockey by tho two greatest teams in tho Dominion. The game was most exciting, brimful of incident, and there was not a dull moment from start to finish. Hickson was tho mainstay, of the Wellington defence, and got his side out of many tight corners. When a forward is coming down, ho locks the ball up between two "nines or tens," and then leisurely gets rid of it after the mail has gon? by. Ho is a powerful hitter, but indulges in too much body play. SEVEN-A-SIDE TOURNAMENT. The seven-a-sido tournament, arranged by the Wellington Association, will bo commenced at Day's Bay this afternoon. Owing to the large number of entries from senior and junior clubs, the tournament will cover two Saturdays, and some fast and interesting games should result
