NOTES ON THE RACING.

All the acceptors went to the post for the Glasgow Handicap, which proved a gift for Morecambe, whose full-brother, Negative, had won the opening event on tiio iirst day. Jlorecarabe had finished fourth behind Epsom Lass in the Mira;nar Handicap 011 Saturday last, and the race had evidently improved him. Te Kahurangi was the actual favourite, and he showed all his brilliancy off Uhe mark but, as usual, failed to' see the distance out. Dogger Bank did not begin quito as well as usual and, having the outside running on the bend, ho was unable to get nearer than third. Nono of the Trentham or Hutt candidates showed up well at all. Kongomau .was t)io only withdrawal from the Karori Handicap, for which Gold Circle was made tlio biggest favourite of tlic'mocting up till that time. The chestnut colt, wita tne crack jockey'.Whittaker in the saddle, got away weli, and had matters all his own way, but alter leading at one stage of the straight, ho ien back, and tiiusued out of a place. The winner proved to be Undecided, on whom Hatch rotlo a very nico race, getting his mount away smartly in the iirst place, mid riding a superb finish at the end. Undecided is in the Winter Cup, and for his victory at Trentham he will have to carry a penalty of 51b., which will bring,. his 'weight up to list, lllb. 1 Somersault, who is the only Chokebore candidate in the New Zealand Cup, showed plenty of pace in tlio first half-mile, but failed to see tlio journey out. He carried bandages on both torelegs, and also on the near hindleg. Sandy l'aul ran a good race, but (as oil the lirst day) lie' was just commencing to tire when tlio six furlongs wero completed. The Vittoria Hurdle Handicap was A chapter of. accidents, only three of the seven horses completing the course. Jim and Kremlin came down after passing llie stand, and Egypt fell, when in tlio lead five furlongs from home, while Whitestone followed suit, three furlongs from home. Nono of the jockeys were injured, but Egypt slipped a. muscle of a leg, but may be* able to race again oil Saturday. Waterworks, who won easily at the finish, would probably have, beaten Egypt had the latter got round safely, as Waterworks was fast overhauling him at the timo of tho accident. Apart from Kremlin and Waterworks, it was one of tlio poorest fields that ever contested a hurdle race at Trentham.

Prospector was withdrawn from tho ] ■Wellington steeplechase leaving seven runners to go to the post. The race was remarkable for the fact that it was won from end to end by Hoanga in very fast time, and also because all the candidates completed tho course without mishap. When the totalisator closed, Pleiades .was a slightly better favourite than Paritutu ami Hcanga, but every ouo of tho candidates named had over 700 .tickets opposite his name. From a good start, Hoanga quickly went to .the front, and led tlie wliole way, giving an almost faultless exhibition of jumping. Owing to the chestnut' gelding's reputation for running off, his rider took no risks and, while covering as little ground as possible, kept his jnount near the centre of every fence. About three furlongs from home it appeared, from the stand, as if Pleiades hid been disappointed when trying to get the. inside, running from Hoanga and, when the winner came in. a small section of the crowd treated' his- ■ rider to a hostile demonstration. Hoanga, by his victory, has now earned the maximum penalty for tho Grand National Steeplechase, and'will have to carry list. 21b. in that event. Pleiades, cleverly ridden by F. Lind, jumped right against the wing of every fence, and covered less ground than> any other horse in tho race, but he was'outpaced by the winner. Paritutu, on tho other' hand, covered a lot of ground. He mado ouo faulty jump at' tho log fence and, when he weighed in, a severe gash was noticeable on one of his hind-legs. Ho repeated his usual performance of running second in important races. Very little fault could be found with the jumping of the other candidates but, when it camo to pace, they were simply unable to compete with the winner. 1

Bracken and Gold Circle, who had competed earlier in the day, were the only withdrawals from the Waterloo Handicap, tho large field of seventeen runners being left to go to the post. The public evidently anticipated that Wauchope would bo. improved by his race on l:nc first, day, for the freedom horse was installed a warm favourite. However, as •on the first day, ho failed to get to the end of tho journey. The race was the most interesting of the meeting. First one and then another of the candidates appeared t& possess chances and, at the finish, half a dozen of them finished within three lengths of one another. Tho winner, Kilosteri, was going better than any of the others at tho finish anil, had it been a mile, he would have won comfortably. On the first, day ho had a very bad passage, and, but for getting shut in at a lata stage, would assuredly have been in a place. He received 110110 too good a passage yesterday, but Oliver rode one of his best races, and got him out of a difficult position at the right time. With the winner of the Parliamentary Handicap and the'second horso not included in ve.stcnlay's field, Kilostcri's party would probably have -supported tile Kileheinzi colt heavily but for the fact that tho distanco was a furlong less. As it was, lie paid the biggest dividend of t.ho meeting. no is entered for the New Zealand Cup, which is to be run in November. Peary, who was ? not a competitor on the first "day, was well-backed yesterday on t.ho strength of a trial which lie did with Ainsdnle (the Trial Plato winner) last week, when the two finished together, a'ld put up a record for tho sand track. Peary ran (|uite ; up to that gallop, and finished a good second yesterday. Waipunui, who finished close up, third, was n rank outsider.

Though Bollin was made favourite .for the Jumpers' Flat Handicap, lie could do no bettor than run third behind The Nativo and To liu. Right through tlio lace, The Native appealed to bo the winner, and his victory was easily achieved at the finish. Among the spectators interested ill the race was Mr.' J. Hayward, best known as the importer of the great fioult. Mr. Ila.vward brought Worry (Tlio Native's sire) to New Zealand from. New South Wales, and he also imported Clold lieef, the sire of The, Native's dam, from England.

Another field of seventeen lined up for the concluding event, the Thorndon Handicap. The bracketed pair, Varna and Aliuapai, were the favourite i-election, backers hoping that Varna (ridden by 11. Gray) would repeat his first day's victory. The Stcpniak gelding, however, burst a blcod-vcssol during tlio race, and finished a long way' back, First day's form worked out correctly, for Longstep was out of the race, while Varna met with the accident mentioned, and Taft, wlio had run third to this pair oil Saturday, won easily, giving A. Oliver his second winning mount for the day.
