TRENTHAM RACES.
♦ WINTER MEETING. WELLINGTON STEEPLECHASE. WON BY HOANGA. HANDICAP AVON BV KILOSTERI. There wns again beautiful weather for the second day of the Wellington Racing Club's winter meeting, and a very large crowd of people assembled at Trentham to witness tho sport. Among tlioso present were his Excellency the Governor and party, the Acting-Prime Minister (Sir James' Carroll), the Minister for Railways (Hon. J, A. Millar), the president of the Racing Conference (Sir Geo. Clifford), and leading sportsmen from all parts of the Dominion. The grounds had iihproved since the first day, and the day's racing have been a pleasant event lor the club's patrons but for the wretched train arrangements. On the outward run, passengers had a most uncomfortable experience before being able to board tba Te Avo trains, hundreds of persons being crowded outside waiting their turn to go ill by a narrow gateway. The home journey' was something worse, one of tho trains taking an hour and twenty minutes to travel the eighteen miles, and another train (on which the Minister for Railways was a passenger) taking well over two hours. As a result of the recent wet weather and" frosts, the going on the racing track was still holding, and some of the times registered were very creditable. The principal event of the day—tho Wellington Steeplechase —provided a very fine race. The whole of the seven starters completed the course without mishap, victory going to Hoanga, who also won the cross-country event 011 the day. A splendid finish resulted in the Waterloo .Handicap, in which tho Ilighden colours \Vere carried to victory by Kilosteri.
