THE SUPPLY OF CLERGY.

MORE NEW ZEALANDERS WANTED.

An earnest appeal tn (he laymen of Iho Anglican Diocese of Wellington to foo that tlic Bishop is provided with an adequate supply of New Zealnnders for his ftn 11" of clergy was niaile by the Key. 0. 11. Stent, vicar of Ractihi, in his sermon lit St. Paul's Pro-Cathedral yesterday morning. Mr. Stout, who is an Oxford man, inentioni'il that ho had only boon in New Zealand about four years, but ho could say Hint Iho clergy who had coiuo out from England wore very happy in their work in tho Dominion. Still the. fact remained that a country like New, Zealand ought to give its own young nion for the ministry, and it ought not to bo necessary for the Bishop to state, as ho had done in his address to the Synod on Tuesday last, that it would he necessary to i;o to England to fill certain vacancies in his staff. The fact that they now had a New Zcalnndor for their Bishop—ono of their own men, who had lived aiid worked in their midst for some twenty years—should be an additional incentive in (ho laity to sec to it that thoro was a. steady supply of New Zealand clergy for the efficient working of the diocese. It was not enough to give of their substance; they should also give themselves for tho work of tho Church. Tho Biehop would hold his first ordination on Sunday next, and Mr. Stent expressed the hopo that at future ordinations young New Zenlnnders would bo found coming forward in sufficient numbers to fill all tlio vacancies in the. ranks of the clergy, so that it would no longer be necessary for tlm Bishop to go to tho Homeland in order to keep liis staff up to the requisite strength.
