—9 UNITED'S WIN OVER WESLEY. AND OTHER RESULTS. Knrori 8 Y.M.C.A 2 •Victoria Col. ..... 4 Wellington 0 United 6 Wesley 0 The senior championship was advanced a further stage on Saturday last, the best of weather prevailing. The following ore the accounts of the senior and other games: UNITED-WESLEY. This match was played en No. 3 ground, Day's Bay, and resulted in United scoring their second win this season. Wesley attacked from the commencement, and Al'Eldowncy (United) conceded a. corner, but Wesley failed to take advantago of the opportunity. Tho Blue forwards kept up tho attack, but the defence of Hickson and M'Eldowney frustrated their efforts. Tho United forwards then took the play to. the other end of the field, but tho ball went behind. The pace set by the forwards on each side was now very fast, tho ball travelling up and down the field. Prom a passing-rush by the United forwards, the ball was sent into the circle to Andrews, who obtained their first goal. Birch (Wesley) carried the ball down field, but was stopped by M'Eldowney, who sent it over the side-line. Wesley forwards attacked, and, through the agency of Keys, equalised the score. United now attacked, and Andrews had a shot, but the ball missed the goal. The United forwards instituted a passing-rush, which ended in the ball being hit behind, | through poor shooting. Dickson (Wesley) then carried the ball into the United twenty-five, but M'Eldowney secured, a.nd play returned to the centre of the field. Wesley presently carried play to the United circle, but Hickson saved. The Blues still attacked, but they missed a couple of chances through faulty shooting. In the second spell the United forwards showed better combination than their opponents, and some good passing-rushes resulted. They attacked, a.nd, after being repulsed two or three times, Collins beat the Wesley goalkeeper. From tho "bullyoff" the''United' forwards, by accurate passing, carried the ball into the circle, inn] Andrews ' sent it'between the posts. At this stage United' held tho advantage, and they kept the Wesley backs defending. Ag"ain . the Bod forwards carried play into the circle, and Andrews obtained the third goal. The Wesley forwards now attacked, but Hickson, who played well throughout the game, turned them back, by sending the ball on to his forwards, which ended in Organ finding the net.' Birch (Wesley) took the . ball down tho line, but centred feebly, and M'Eldowney' intercepted, and sent it over the side-line. Another rush by the United forwards saw play once again in the Wesley circle, where Andrews scored tho sixth goal. When the whistle sounded' Wesley were defending. . Mr. G. P. M'Kenzie was the referee. .
COLLEGE-WELLINGTON. Wellington, playing with ten men, suffered defeat at' the hands of Victoria College on No. 1 Ground, Day's Bay, by I goals to nil. The 'Collego 'forwards attacked at once, but lost a chance through a forward giving "sticks" when centreing. M'Dougall (Wellington) then carried play to. the College'goal, but the defence of Kibblewhife and Gazo was sound, and the College forwards, presently rushed play to the Wellington end, whero they missed ' scoring through erratic shooting. Once again M'Dougall tried to penetrate the delence, but Burbidgo stooped his progress, and the Collego forwards attacked, this time G. Slfack being successful in scoring. Play now became fast, tho ball travelling to each end in quick succession. Hall (Wellington) succeeded in tho Collego forwards and, for somo time, Wellington were attacking without any result. Kibblewhite at length secured, and sent the ball on to his forwards, who rushed into the circle, enabling I'itt to score the second- goal. For the greater part of the second spell Wellington were on the' defensive, the combination of the Collego forwards: severely trying tho mettle of the fullbacks. Tho Strack Bros, were now noticeable for combined play, carrying the ball into the circle whero G. Struck overran it. liigg, however, who was behind him, sent it between the posts. The- Wellington forwards now took a hand in things, and rushed along the field but could not' break through the defenca set up by tho Collego Lacks. Through hard hitting by tho Wellington backs, their forwards managed to carry play into College circle, but Hollis missed a chance in failing to take a pass. Hall now dribbled into tho College t«enly-Qve and, instead of sending the ball on to Turton,' tried to beat Gaze, who secured and sent the ball out about half way.: Tho College fcrwards, by passing, rushed into the Wellington circle, and G. Strack onco again scored. Wellington then carried play to College end but, playing only two half-backs, they could not get the ball to their forwards, and Collego were.attacking at the call of time. Mr. J. W. Gendall was referee.
KAROM-Y.M.C.A. Y.M.C.A. did not improve their position in tho championship by their game with Karori. Commencing with only ten men, they were on the'defence for sonic time. The Karori forwards broke away at tho start and, within a few minutes, G. Davics had secured a goal. Y.M.C.A. then rallied, and R. Parton carried play into Karori- territory where a scramble ensued, the samo player being successful iu scoring. Tho Colours kept up the attack, but the defence of {'he karori backs was sound. Play.now went into tho Y.M.C.A. circle, where, from a pass, Campbell scored. The Karori forwards still attacked, but Y.M.C.A. backs. defending well, managed to shift play to the centre of the field. Karori came back, and Hall cen-tred-at the right moment, enabling Davies to obtain his second goal. Y.M.C.A. now attacked for some time, but were not successful in scoring, the spell ending with Karori defending. On"commencing (ho second half, Karori took things rather easily, and missed several chances. Loader (Y.M.C.A.) at length received the ball, and scored a good goal. This woke Karori up, and play was rushed to the Y.M.C.A. goal, where Holmes put in good defensive play, but, eventually, tho ball.was sent on to Lewer, who beat tho backs and scored. Attacking stjll. Lower once, again beat the backs, and passed to G. Davics, who sent the ball between the posts. Y.M.C.A. were now very much on the defensive, and'Karori, through : the agency of Murphy and Lewer (2) added-four more goals ;to their total. Mr. Carver was referee.
OTHER CITY DOINGS. THE JUNIOR GRADE MATCHES. College A (5) beat Metropolitan (2). Mr. M.. Liickie was referee. - , , . United ft) defeated K.Y.M.T. (3). Mr. M'Dowall was referee. Wesley (5) defeated. Karori (2). The losers played without a full tram. -Mr. Forrest was the referee. Government Life Insurance were defeated by Wellington by 2 goals to nil. Tho scorers for the winners were Cox and Bundle. Mr. Grinrod controlled plav. St. Mark's 19) defeated Yidoria College B (1). Mr. Egluhd was referee. Third Class. Government Life Insurance (3) drew with St. Mark's (3). Ilutt Valley (2) beat Gregg's (1). ' Ladies' Matches. Senior Grade. Hinemoa. (4) defeated College Old Girls (0). I'etone (1) drew with Victoria College (1). Ramblers (7) defeated Wellington (0). Junior Grade. Hercwhini (3) beat College Old Girls (1). Ramblers v. Celtic—This match waa played at Karori, -and was won by the former team by <> goals to nil. The goals wore scored bv Misses. Benge, Wagstaff, M'Lctkl, Harvey, ami Miller (2). The winners played a very good game, and kept their places well, while the losers (who are a much younger team) bunched together too much. Their captain, Miss Murphy, will have a good team with a little more coaching .in the direction indicated, Mr. Clauds Campbell was referee,
HOCKEY REFEREES, An examination under Iho auspices of the Wellington Referees' Association will bo held at Mr. Morpeth's rooms, Willis Street, on Wednesday evening next, at 7 p.m. The association have decided that all referees must pass au examination in the rules. MATCHES ELSEWHERE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.! Auckland, June 25. The hockey matches were played in. wintry conditions yesterday. In the senior grade, University heat Tonsonby by . 5 goals to 3, Auckland beat Christchurch by 10 goals to nil, and United beat Parn'ell by 3 goals to 2. The Auckland Associations selector has chosen A and B teams to practise in view of the shield match against Wellington.
