JOTTINGS FROM WANGANUI.
« _ ISOLATED CALEDONIANS. ANNUAL BOROUGH ESTIMATES. (By. Tclcnraph.—Special Correspondents Wanganui, Juuo 2t. At the annual meeting of tho "Wanganui Caledonian Society Mr. U. Ross was reelected president, and Mr. N. M'Kenzie Forbes, secretary. The usual- routine of the annual meeting was broken into by a discussion on tha question of whether the society should affiliate with the NewZealand Athletic Union. The presideat said that the society was now practically the only body of \ts kind standing aloof from the union,- and it had proved its ability to carry on without the introduction of the professional element. Mr. J. T. Muir, speaking from long e:sr.-erience with amateur bodies, doubted if colonial amateurism was of a really genuine type. In the' Old Country the intrinsic value of a trophy was accounted nothing, as athletes strove merely for the honour. Here tho reverse was tho case, and; to use a slang expression, amateurism in this country'was "all rats.'-' The matter of affiliating with' the Athletic .Union was finally left to the committee to decide.
The Wangauui- Borough Council's estimate for the currcut year place the anticipated revenue frcm all 'sources at ■£•2.1,309. Of this total it is expected that rents from reserves will produce ,£2200. and that the share of the gas profits applied to the relief of rates will be *£2000. On'the expenditure-side the first item is the -612,314 overdraft, with'which the year opened. Subsidies to public institutions are expected to account for JE'93O, and ,£2433 will be used to moke up an expected deficiency in the water supply account. The only revenue in regard to water is expected to be ,SIBOO, for sales to shipping and railways, there being neither fee nor rate for ordinary use. The total of the expenditure side of the ledger is estimated at .£30,703. and, if anticipations are realised, this would mean .£2OOO reduction in the overdraft by the end of the year. The wool-classing classes of the Wanganui Education Board, which started very successfully a couple of years ago, have had to be abandoned, owing to tho poor support now accorded them. The Wanpnui Education Board's annual report shows 19-1 schools in this district, with a roll number of H.2C9, and an average attendance of 12,453, both of thee figures being an increase on the previous year's figures. The number of teacher's -is I3R. of ..which there are 195 males and 243 females: The report notes that not less than 30 per cent, of these are slill uncertificated, and adds, (hat, owing to the board's duty of finding, employment for teachers leaving the Training College, it will lie necessary from time to time to dispense with the services of a number of uncertificated teachers.
