OTAKI.
The day was fine hero for (ho holiday, but no ceremony was held. The town was deserted, the business places closed, and the day proved very quiet. A service was held at the Church of England iu the morning. Several local residents upsnt the day in Wellington or Levin, where football and hockey matches were the main attractions. Heavy rain tell at night. The local bowling club intend holding a ball here during next month, when it is hoped to eclipse last year's function. A strong committee has been formed, with Mr. Sathcrlcy as secretary. A banquet is shortly to be tendered to Mr. W. 11. Field, M.P., at Levin, in which Otaki supporters will take a prominent part. Two earthquake shocks have occurred here within the past few Hours, one of short duration at 5.20 p.m. yesterday, and His other at 2.15 this morning. The latter was the .heaviest experienced for some years. -• '■'• A proposal is again on foot to have a separate- county formed, embracing the country from Taekakariki to Ohau Kiver.
