PASTEURISATION OF SKIM-MILK.
There is on Exhibition '. at the-show an appliance invented and'manufactured by Messrs., Johnstone and . '.Hoskiiig, of Palmerston .North, for tho pasteurisation and' regeneration of skim-milk, ■•it-has-for some time past' been' universally recognised that if the spread-of -tuberculosis in calves, and pigs is to be checked, skim-milk'must be pasteurised. Tho difficulty hitherto has been that of a successful appliance, but this has been completely overcome. by : the J. and H. invention. The superiority of -this contrivance is being hourly demonstrated at the "sho'iv,' and farmers who.are.anxious to rear healthy.stock for.tho maintenance of their dairy herds, and, to increase the profits of tho pork and -bacon industry, a brief description of the working of "the J. and 11. pasteuriser may. bo of- interest. Immediately lipon' leaving the separator' the skim-milk passes into the pasteuriser at tho base of the machine. Un the inward passage the milk passes over-a coneshaped valve, which deflates. it over" a series of.steam jets, heating-it to an-even pasteurising . temperature. . The >• pasteuriser may bo used in-conjunction with a regenerator, which is also.a Jland 11. patent. Worked in this way, the. milk passes first into, the-, regenerator,: and theiiee into tho' pasteuriser,-.- where/ jt- j s brought up .to the required ■ temperature. From the pasteuriser the milk Hows-again into a separate chamber of the regenerator, but the construction is so' ingenious that , a doublo purpose is served. . Tho cooler milk from the separator,.while on its way to tho pasteuriser,• absorbs tho heat from tho.milk which is-flowing from the latter appliance. In other words, the cold milk cools, down the hot" milk,;'and the hot milk warms up the cold. In,
addition to the saving of heating, there arc other distinct advantages ill this process which will be at once apparent to the intelligent dairy-farmer. Another point to recommend it .is.the care which lias bren taken in its construction to provide for easy cleaning. .Messrs. Johnstone and' IlosUing are also displaying 'many other of their dairy appliances, of which they are the sole inventors, proprietors, patentees, and. manufacturers. Brief mention must be made of their froth preveuter, which it. is estimated - will save its cost three times over in one season. The experience of one large dairy coni.pany; is. sufficient to - prove the worth' of ithis invention. .'■ The company in question h;ts eighty-five' creameries.-• They ordered ;ono froth-preventer for - a ■ test, and after a -.lfrief trial, eighty-four more were ordered.
