9 The fortnightly meeting of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held in the Chamber of Commerce last evening. Mr. J. Ilott was in tho chnir, and there were also present: Mesdames Chettenden, Christie, and Messrs. Of. Brown and J. M. Richardson. A communication was received from the Minister for Agriculture, Industries, and Commerce, .stating, that he could not instruct the Department's officers to assist the society's inspectors, but he would not object to the veterinarian rendering assistance as long as their own ivork was not interfered with. It was stated that the Government veterinarians were in no way bound to assist the society, and if they did so, it was on condition that they would not be called as witnesses in any prosecution that might arise. The inspector reported that he had ordered the destruction of six horses during the last fortnight, and he had several more cas'es under consideration.
