lhe critics who hove written reviews of the late Lady Halle's professional career agree that, as examples of pure musical art, her performances have never been surpassed in England l:y those of any other woman violinist, (says ail English writer). She contradicted a popular notion by developing from ail "infant prodigy" into one of tlio most refined and intellertual musicians of her time. There are many references (0 the favour shown her in royal and aristocratic circles. But that came long after she had won a high reputation among the most discerning section of the music-loving public of Europe, ller work in England is described as having been "characterised at once by lofty dignity and inelfablo grace, sobriety of style and facile*' freedom of technique." Eike many other musicians, J.ady Halle remained comparatively poor to the end of her life. After the death oi' her son in ItiOS she settled in Berlin as a teacher of the violin, and appeared there in a series of concerts held only n few months ago. f-'hc frequently revisited England, hut was seldom seen in public here during the last twelve years. One of her greatest admirers was Queen Alexandra, who attempted in vain to induce her to settle in England. Lady Halle had bee.i in failing health for about twelve months.
