KANGAROOS FOR KAPITI ISLAND.
Sir,—Just a word about Ivapiti Island. I quite agree with those who aro in favour of excluding all settlement from the island. I do not agree with those who advocate tho use of sheep or Angora or any other kind of goats for keeping down tho grass, as sheep and Boats arc no novelty in _ New Zealand. But 1 would suggest for this purpose and so preventing hush fires, that a number of kangaroos and wallabies bo obtained from the colder parts of Australia, Victoria and Tasmania. In the early days an island similar to Ivapiti, near Adelaide, abounded with kangaroos, and on that account is called Kangaroo Island to this day. Of course, for the want of sanctuary or protection they have been exterminated long ago.—l am, etc., KAPITI. Juno 2, 1911.
